From Start to Finish, A Royal Outfit

Well, I know it's been a few days since I have updated, but that's because I really wanted to do a start to finish post of at least one outfit in the project and the outfit which I started Saturday night after work was perfect for it because it turned out to be a quick make. Just one quick thing before getting to that outfit, a progress photo to share. While working on researching one of my last papers for the semester, I did some knitting while reading articles. Since I was having to read, I needed a piece that was just straight knitting, maybe a little measuring, but no counting. That translated to working on Mulan's shift. It's just almost to her knees now. I don't forsee this one taking much longer to finish.

A Photo Progression of the Making of a Princess Outfit

Well, here it is. Start to finish, one post, one outfit. It took me about nine hours spred out over three days to make it . While the background isn't as nice as my green blanket that I'm using for Mulan's shift (though I should have taken it on there, that would have been cool), I did manage to take all the pictures but the final "portrait studio" picture in the same spot on the blanket on my bed. It actual is the same spot that has ended up as the background of a lot of my photos. If you're wondering what it is, the brown is the hair of an angel, the blue-green his wing; the blanket is a picture of two cherubs. Okay, without further ado, the outfit.

Now, I know you want to know which outfit it is. It will be clear enough before you get to the end picture where my mom has spliced the portrait studio picture together with a movie shot of the outfit, but if you are impaitent, I guess you can look at the last picture in the post to see the finished product. Warning, this post is very picture heavy; I took just over fifty photos in the progression of this outfit. I designed this outfit myself.

Here I am starting the top of the outfit on the circular. I find the circular need works well to work stuff that is worked flat. That, and you can't find a straight needle in a size 0 or 1 without ordering online and there are too many stitches for it to fit on one DPN. This picture is just after I started the third row. (Oh, and if you aren't sure what color the yarn is, it is a darker but not deep purple. It's called grape, and it's about that color).

Oops. Second picture and I messed up my photo count already. I meant to take a picture after every two rows, but I just got carried away with knitting. This is near the end of row five.

Just a few stitches later at the beginning of row six. If you are wondering why the stitching looks different here, it's because you are looking at the back side of the piece. I always try to take pictures with the front side facing, but not this one. I am about to make the arm holes. The problem? I forgot how I did it the first time. LOL. The sleeve design on this piece is the same as on Aurora's ball gown, but apparently I forgot to write down how I designed the sleeves on that one. And thus I am very glad that I decided to keep a journal of this project on my blog complete with pictures. I was able to pull up the pictures I took of Aurora's sleeves and figure out just how I designed them. Yeah for technology!

And here I am just at the end of row seven. I managed to remember how to do the armholes for the sleeves and have them waiting on the stitch holders and have yarn ends everywhere.

This picture is just after row nine was finished. You can kind of see the V-dip in the front of the top. I discovered a better way of making the V-dip than the way the pattern I have used for the ball gowns says to do it. The pattern for the ball gowns calls for you to carry the working yarn under the stitches at a certain point and gather it together using a stitch. Here, I have slipped a stitch (AKA didn't work it) for a few rows so that it pulls the cast on row down with it. It makes a much cleaner V-dip in my opinion.

Ah, first clue as to the outfit if you haven't snuck a peek at the last picture. Here I am measuring the length on the doll. Jasmine. It's one of her tops. Can you guess which outfit yet? It needs just one more row in garter stitch to keep the top from rolling up as stockinette stitch has a tendency to do.

And the top off the needles with yarn ends everywhere and the arm holes still on the stitch holders.

Back on Jasmine after I darned in the yarn ends. I'm really happy with the way the shirt design turned out. Actually, while I was writing this pattern down from my chicken scratching notes, I got to thinking that I might be able to make a better fitting red top for Jasmine (the one I've made just falls off the doll) using the base of this design. I may try it in the next few days.

Working on the sleeves. Since there's no shaping to them, I just took pictures every four rows to show progress. Row 4...

Row 8...

Row 12...

Row 16...and should be long enough now...

Back on Jasmine and getting a measurement, yep, it's long enough.

Casted off the needles and a yarn end to sew up the seam.

On Jasmine with the sleeve sewn together.

A second sleeve just appeared!!!! LOL. I wish. I just decided not to take the same pictures of the second sleeve as that would be boring. So I just took a picture after I had the second sleeve sewn together. The top is now about 99% complete.

And on to the pants. Keeping in mind the misfortune of the red pants being too short, I decided to add more rows at the first to give it some length at the waist. Again, I took pictures every two rows at the start of the pants. Row 2...

Row 4...

Row 6 and the stockinette stitch is beginning to roll...

Row 8...

And measuring eight rows against Jasmine. Seems like its going to work better than the way I had the red pants designed.

Row 10 and I have added in the increases to start on the pant legs.

Row 2 of pant leg one...

Row 4...and every two rows is going to be very boring for pictures, so I won't bore you with that, I changed to every four rows...

Row 8...

Row 12...the pictures made counting rows very easy. It's a little boring on a blog though, I'm sorry.

Row 16...

Oops...forgot row 20's picture, this is a few stitches into row 21...

Row 24 and it's reached length....

So it was time to put the cuff in. If these seem smaller than the pictures of the red pants, they are. I'm not sure how though. The yarn is both Caron Simply Soft. I used the same needles. And if anything, the purple pants should be bigger. But the legs weren't. I'm wondering if I'm stitching tighter on the purple pants than I did on the red pants.

And finished off with a long tail for sewing up the seam.

Measuring the pant leg on Jasmine. It seems to fit the doll the same as the red pants though. I'm not sure what was going on with them.

Okay, so I wanted to see the other pant leg progress too, so you get photos of pant leg two. Row 4...

Row 8...

Row 12...

Row 16...

Row 20...

Row 24...

Cuff made...

And casted off with a sewing tail.

I was worried that this pants had stitched up smaller than the red pants, so before sewing them all together, I measured them on Jasmine. At this point I could still frog the pants if I needed to and remake them. But when I laid them on the doll and wrapped the pants around her legs, they seemed to fit just fine, so I went ahead with the sewing.

All sewn up. Yes, the pants are still not to her waist, but that's okay on these. I still had to add the lighter edging to the waist band. And they aren't quite as short on the legs as they look in this picture. They just were not cooperating for this picture.

Here is the top and pants with the lighter purple edging on them. Since it was a smaller edging that really looks like a waist band on this outfit, I just crocheted the edging on this time instead of knitting one row on the top and two on the pants. It made for a better waist band on the pants anyway. Just have the tail ends to darn in.

And back on Jasmine with the tail ends darned in. The outfit now is about 95% complete at this point, but it's missing more than just the snaps. Have you figured out which one it is? Well, it's the purple pant outfit. I don't think it's in the first movie (there the purple outfit is a dress), but she wears it in The Return of Jafar. And like the dress, it has a wrap around the waist.

So here's the wrap. It just barely reaches past her hips on the pant outfit (unlike the dress where it is down to about her knees), so I didn't think it was going to take that long. Here's after two rows.

And after it has reached lenght. It went so quick, I forgot to take progress pictures of it. But it is only ten rows long at 36 stitches wide at its widest point.

Off the needles and wrapped around Jasmine. It just needs the edging on it now.

I'm almost done with the picture progression, I promise. Here is the wrap with the edging on it, once again crocheted. Oops...forgot to darn in that end.

Okay, that's better. Not a very big piece at all.

And wrapped around Jasmine. 99% completed now. Just have to sew on snaps...

And something a little extra. This is the first outfit I have done that has an emblishment that can't be done with yarn. She has a little gem on the wrap. Okay, it's not so little. But here I have replicated it with beads sewn on to the skirt.

And here we are. Finished product!!! If I had a day to myself with no work or school work, I could have made the outfit in one day. Nine hours. And the price sticker of this piece? (just because I was curious since I was able to time out the progress with the time stamps on the photos) Using the formula told to me by my artist coworker, this is about $70. Not that I think I could get anyone to buy such a simple outfit for that. Nor could I see charging that much for this little outfit.

And here is the studio picture. I really am happy with how this outfit turned out. I have always loved this outfit, and I like it even more having made it. At some point in time, I may have to make this for myself to keep on my Jasmine doll when she's not modeling. Provided I don't fall in love with another one of her outfits first. LOL.

And here she is with the movie photo. Once again, I'm pleased with how this one turned out. :)

And unfortunately tomorrow is my long day at work, so I won't be crafting much tomorrow. I probably won't have an update tomorrow night, but I promise I will try to update on Wednesday night at the latest.

160 DAYS REMAINING!
